FOCUS GROUP Schedule for METATOPIA 2011

Updated 10/25/11

METATOPIA Event Registration works differently from other Double Exposure events. While there are no advancement rounds, some of the events are red to start with because they are "invitation only". This does NOT mean that you are completely excluded from playing in them, only that you need to be invited. So when you send an eMail to us at to THIS ADDRESS, you may ask to be included in those events. We will probably call you and discuss your choices with you.

So send eMail with the things you would LIKE to play in, whether you are a Designer, a Helper or a Player. We will do our best to match you up with the events that you are interested in. There WILL be a Big Board at METATOPIA, and any seats which are not filled in advance CAN be filled at the convention.

You may ONLY reserve seats in METATOPIA 2011 events if you are pre-registered. Click here to pre-register for METATOPIA 2011 if you have not already done so.

We will reply within 48 hours with a confirmation that your requests were received. If you do NOT get a confirmation, assume that your codes are NOT received and try again. Note that you MUST include a valid eMail reply-to address for us to reach you to confirm!

The MASTER INDEX OF EVENTS

F025: "Sojourn Focus Group" by Saint Erebus Games; presented by Brendan Conway. Sojourn, a massive city of smoke-belching towers and brass spires, crawls across the Land, consuming it piece by piece. Sojourn leaves only empty, barren, flat desert in its wake. It calls to the people of the Land, offering them wonders and joys that they could never hope to have on their own, without Sojourn's help. They flock to it, and they aid it on its mission of consumption. Unless they refuse its call, and sabotage it and its activities, standing against it in hopes of stopping the unending hunger of the city. Players take on the role of those denizens of the Land called by the city. Will they choose to stand with the city and earn their heart's darkest desires, or will they stand against it and protect their Land? One player takes on the role of Sojourn, and one takes on the role of the Land, each trying to woo the other players to their cause. The battle can only be decided by the choices of the main characters. This high-level focus group will allow the designer of the game to discuss concepts and ideas of the game. Friday, 10:00PM - 11:00PM; One Session; All Ages.

F026: "Thirty Minutes to Live" by Parenthesis Press; presented by Neal Stidham. Thirty Minutes to Live is an experiment in narrative gaming, designed to be adaptable to multiple genres. You and the other players are confined to a room with half an hour on the clock. Something bad will happen when the clock runs out... unless you choose one amongst you to take the fall. This focus group will convene to work out the concept and help the designer to work out the basic mechanics of the game. Friday, 10:00PM - 12:00AM; One Session; All Ages.

F029: "Sojourn Focus Group" by Saint Erebus Games; presented by Brendan Conway. One player takes on the role of Sojourn, and one takes on the role of the Land, each trying to woo the other players to their cause. The battle can only be decided by the choices of the main characters. This mid-level focus group will allow the designer of the game to discuss concepts and ideas of the game. Friday, 11:00PM - 12:00AM; One Session; All Ages.

F044: "Rylera Focus Group" by Shattered Legacy; presented by Warren Morrison. Rylera is complex and detailed Fantasy world setting with multiple races and nationalities. Each will have a full history of growth and development socially, geographically, and religiously, as well as prior interactions with one another other. This creates an engaging world setting and the opportunity for roleplay between player characters. Deviating from the standard take on fantasy races and a more realistic explainable magic system, Rylera focuses more on the roleplay aspect of RPGs than the mechanics during gameplay by requiring very little calculation for effects. Rylera balances a Talent, Magic and Psionic power system, that will allow experienced players to create their own unique spells for the powers given and customize their characters growth while maintaining a numerical simplicity. This focus group will help the designer to flesh out the ideas he has for the setting. Saturday, 9:00AM - 10:00AM; One Session; All Ages.

F045: "The Secret Fire Focus Group" by Secret Fire Games; presented by George Strayton. George will present a topic for discussion as it pertains to his game, The Secret Fire: The balance between immersive play (where the players get deeply into the roles of their characters) versus casual play (where players essentially "play" themselves and chit-chat during the game). This high-level focus group will allow the designer of the game to discuss concepts and ideas of the game. Saturday, 9:00AM - 10:00AM; One Session; All Ages.

F059: "Displacement Focus Group" by Shattered Legacy; presented by Warren Morrison. Displacement is a unique take on the standard fantasy RPG setting, with themes of purity, reinvention and self exploration. The player characters can all be from different worlds and settings, or all from the same world and brought to the game world. The native inhabitants of the game are unplayable, and their position at the top of the social, political and religious hierarchies provide a constant social element to the standard table top adventure scenarios. This focus group will help the designer to flesh out the ideas he has for the setting. Saturday, 10:00AM - 11:00AM; One Session; All Ages.

F062: "Wanderlust Focus Group" by Phoenix Outlaw Productions; presented by Shoshana Kessock. Wanderlust is a tabletop RPG about the perils of life out in space when mankind must discover a new homeland alongside their brothers, the fae. When earth is a shattered husk and space is a void full of perils, two orphan races must come together to find their way to a new promised land. This is a game of cooperation and brotherhood, competition and civilization. Moreover, this is a game about the things that bring us together as well as drive us apart. Oh yes, and the things that are out there to get you in the uncharted places we all fear to walk. This high-level focus group will allow the designer of the game to discuss concepts and ideas of the game. Saturday, 11:00AM - 12:00PM; One Session; All Ages.

F116: "Heartbreaker Focus Group" by Gandy Games; presented by Matthew Gandy. You have a destiny...and a fate. Give way to violence, take the quick and easy path of corruption, or deal in secrets, and you'll achieve one before the other. But in order to find out if you're a hero or a villain, first you must break some hearts. Heartbreaker is a card-based storytelling game, which has roots in RPGs like Fiasco and In a Wicked Age and card games like Heart, Spades, and Once Upon a Time. It also draws upon the classical theatre tradition, especially Greek tragedy and the plays of Shakespeare. The game contains dark and mature material.
