LARP (Live Action Role Playing) SCHEDULE for METATOPIA 2016

Updated 11/3/16 at 10:00AM EDT

METATOPIA Event Registration works slightly differently from other Double Exposure events. You may have already gotten an email with events that we've entered for you based on your survey responses, or our general knowledge of you as a player. If we assigned you to something, please note that we'd really appreciate if you could give that game a try (it may be a niche game that we will have trouble getting players for), but IF you feel very strongly that you do not want to playtest it for some reason, please do let us know and suggest an alternative for the slot.

We may end up having several back and forth emails with you to complete your schedule! We are going to work hard to keep the page up to date with events that are filled, but remember that all incoming emails are dealt with in the order in which they are received.

While there are no advancement rounds, some of the events are red and have LOCK symbols because they are HI-TESTs. If you have a Designer or Helper Membership, you can request these events normally. If you have a Player Membership, you can request these events, but note that we MAY reject you.

All non-panel events are classified as one of three different levels of Playtest:

[FOCUS GROUP]: The game is still in the concept stage and players should be expecting to discuss ideas and opinions about how the game should be created, but not actually test much.

[ALPHA TEST]: The game is in early development and not quite ready to play from beginning to end. Players should be expecting to play parts of the game, and perhaps replay those parts or focus on one section of the rules at a time.

[BETA TEST]: The game is in late development and is ready to be played all the way through. Players should be expecting to give feedback and criticism about the game while playing it.

If an event is tagged by the phrase "[NDA REQUIRED]", the Designer has asked that details about his/her game design be kept quiet. The Designer may ask players to sign an actual NDA form, or to just verbally promise not to discuss the game after the playtest.

PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER(S) IN YOUR EMAIL SO WE CAN REACH YOU IF NECESSARY!

Send eMail to m2016@dexposure.com with the events you would LIKE to play in, and PLEASE USE ONLY EVENT CODES IN YOUR EMAIL!. We will then do our best to match you up with the events that you are interested in. There WILL be a Big Board at METATOPIA, and any seats which are not filled in advance CAN be filled at the convention.

PLEASE SEND ONLY ONE PERSON'S CODES PER EMAIL. DO NOT COMBINE REQUESTS.

You are also allowed to submit a second and third choice for events in the same time slot, which will save us time in negotiating what you can get into if your primary choice is filled already. Just make it clear what is an alternate choice so we can enter things quickly.

VERY IMPORTANT: If there are specific times that you DO NOT WANT TO DO ANYTHING, please specify those times. If we see holes in your schedule (that are not lunch or dinner breaks), we MAY try to fill them!

Also, PLEASE note "D" events (panels and seminars) along with others - it is important that we track interest in the various panels, and that we know where you have holes in your schedule.

Send your reservation eMail to us at m2016@dexposure.com

You may ONLY reserve seats in METATOPIA 2016 events if you are pre-registered. Click here to pre-register for METATOPIA 2016 if you have not already done so.

We will reply within 24 hours with a confirmation that your requests were received. If you do NOT get a confirmation, assume that your codes are NOT received and try again. Note that you MUST include a valid eMail reply-to address for us to reach you to confirm!

You are one of the seven. Will you find your ghost? Will they grant you closure, forgiveness, a secret? Or will they howl with disdain and haunt you forever? Based on audience preference, number of players who arrive and various other factors (entirely left to the discretion of our crack facilitator team!), any or all games of each winning category might run. Saturday, 8:00PM - 10:00PM; Fun, All Ages. There are 19 seats left.

L661: [BETA TEST] "What the Bullet Sang" presented by Jeremy Alva. A freeform LARP about life as a survivor following a tragic, life-altering event - an attack, a natural disaster, or an accident - where the players will see its longstanding effects on the individuals and their community as time unfolds around them. Saturday, 8:00PM - 12:00AM; Serious, 18 & Over ONLY. This is a HI-TEST session. There are 3 seats left.

L662: [ALPHA TEST] WARBIRDS; "Blood is Thick" presented by Kimberley Lam. One family struggles with unresolved pain years after the ousting of the Khmer Rouge's brutal regime by Vietnamese invaders in 1979. "Blood is Thick" is a small group LARP about struggling with the lingering impact of genocide on a family where victims and aggressors reside side by side. Best for playtesters who want to explore emotional intense family dynamics, are comfortable with narrative control, and can act under direction. Saturday, 8:00PM - 10:00PM; Very Serious, 18 & Over ONLY. ***ONLY ONE SEAT LEFT!***

[FILLED] L700: [ALPHA TEST] "Bright Story" by Phoenix Outlaw Productions; presented by Josh Harrison. A live combat LARP about kids, adults, and extradimensional buddies gathering to make friends and hunt monsters. The aesthetic and themes of the game are based on animated media like Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Gravity Falls. We're looking to make a LARP that encourages self-care, accommodates identities, and gives players a reason to feel good both in and out of game. Our playtest will involve movement, so some mobility is required, and there will be lightest-touch boffer-to-player contact during the session. Please consider that there will be movement aspects and the use of contact safe weapons to simulate combat between players before deciding to attend. Saturday, 10:00PM - 12:00AM; Fun, 18 & Over ONLY. There are 0 seats left.

L701: [BETA TEST] "It's Nothing" by Games to Gather; presented by Tayler Stokes. A freeform game about misogynistic domestic violence. This game intends to demonstrate the risks and challenges a victim of intimate partner violence faces when leaving their abuser. In game players tell a story about the long-term committed intimate relationship of Harper and Riley as the intensity of abuse mounts. Emotional, physical, and sexual violence will be abstractly represented through various techniques such as drawing injuries on the victim with washable marker (clean up materials provided). This game addresses extremely serious subjects and asks for great sensitivity and vulnerability from all players. Saturday, 10:00PM - 1:00AM; Very Serious, 18 & Over ONLY. There are 3 seats left.

L702: [BETA TEST] "Twisted" presented by Jay Treat. Twisted is Cthulhu Twister with a bit more strategy. You are Ancient Ones, towering ominously over Arkham, your portal to the mortal plane. Manipulate the citizens into releasing you by moving your tentacles from location to location. Short, multiple plays, early playtest. Silly. Physical contact. Ability to bend, and twist on all fours - and to fall from that position safely - required. Saturday, 10:00PM - 12:00AM; Fun, 18 & Over ONLY. There are 2 seats left.

L715: [BETA TEST] "A Wolf by Any Other Name" by Learn Larp LLC; presented by Maury Brown. In the Magimundi, the hidden North American magical universe, two types of creatures can shape-shift into wolves: Lycans and loup-garou. Though their powers are essentially the same, the way they are treated by society is not. Loup-garou are privileged; lycans are persecuted. On this night of the full moon, you are in detention with other New World Magischola students, some of whom are secret lycans, struggling to find the potion that will keep them from changing and outing their condition. What will you do when the moon rises? Sunday, 10:00AM - 2:00PM; Fun, All Ages. There are 5 seats left.

[FILLED] L742: [BETA TEST] "Keymaster" presented by J Li. You are iconically dramatic. You are deeply significant. You are the keys to the pulse of the city. You are the inspiration for the tales they tell of this mysterious place. Come together to create a stylized sequence to express a set of intertwined identities, linked to our real environment. There is no storytelling or plot in Keymaster; the focus is on creating a kind of showreel of the characters and imbuing the world around us with a deep sense of atmospheric meaning. Sunday, 10:00AM - 12:00PM; Fun, 18 & Over ONLY. There are 0 seats left.

[FILLED] L783: [ALPHA TEST] "Our Town" by Phoenix Outlaw Productions; presented by Shoshana Kessock. A serious freeform LARP about the relationships between people in a small town in the face of a sexual assault scandal. Players take on the roles of community members at a Fourth of July BBQ in small town America during a summer marred by a divisive rape trial in the community. Based loosely on small-town trial stories collected from several sources, this game deals with adult topics such as sexual violence, slut shaming, rape culture, and bullying. The focus group will tackle the difficult question of buy-in for players and help develop workshop techniques to develop feelings of player trust and safety to engage with the game's subject material. This is a workshop to put together a working game. Sunday, 12:00PM - 2:00PM; Very Serious, 18 & Over ONLY. This is a HI-TEST session. There are 0 seats left.

L784: [BETA TEST] "Seasoning" by Games to Gather; presented by Jay Sylvano. A didactic, experimental, scenario about sex trafficking, particularly the process of "seasoning" - defined by Sharedhope International as "a combination of psychological manipulation, intimidation, gang rape, sodomy, beatings, deprivation of food or sleep, isolation from friends or family and other sources of support, and threatening or holding hostage of a victim's children". This process is designed to break down a victim's resistance and ensure compliance, and the game seeks to explore this process through metaphor and role play in an attempt to raise awareness on sex trafficking and to explore ways in which games break down our desensitization and increase our empathy. Sunday, 12:00PM - 2:00PM; Very Serious, 18 & Over ONLY. This is a HI-TEST session. There are 3 seats left.
